“OUR MISSION”

A remarkable piece of American history has found a home here on Marco Island.

During this week’s Marco Island City Council meeting, Mr. and Mrs. Schuman presented Marco Island Fire Rescue Chief Chris Byrne with an American flag that flew over the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor. The flag, purchased in Hawaii in 2002, carries with it a profound connection to one of the most significant moments in our nation’s history.

The USS Arizona was lost during the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Today, the memorial stands above the sunken battleship, honoring the 1,177 sailors and Marines who gave their lives and serving as a powerful symbol of sacrifice, service, and remembrance.

In addition to the flag, Mr. and Mrs. Schuman generously donated One Nation, a commemorative book published by Life magazine, which will become part of the Marco Island Library’s collection for the community to enjoy.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Schuman for preserving this important piece of our nation’s history and sharing it with the people of Marco Island. Their generosity helps ensure that the stories of courage, sacrifice, and patriotism continue to inspire future generations.

The Marco Island Fire Rescue Foundation would like to extend our sincere thanks to United Church of Marco Island for their generous support and donation.
